Dermatology Improvement Collaborative 2020-21

From 2020-2021, the HIN partnered with the Industry Dermatology Initiative (IDI) to design a bespoke programme to deliver a Dermatology Improvement Collaborative. The objective of this Collaborative was to support local NHS Trusts to use technology and innovation to deliver improvements within their dermatology services, such as streamlining the patient pathway and reducing existing waiting times.

An unfortunate consequence of the pandemic has been the growth in the number of people waiting for care. This elective care backlog has been both because people have delayed seeking treatment and our capacity to provide care has been reduced, with dermatology being one of the specialities that has one of the greatest challenges.

Through this collaborative we have supported our local Integrated Care Systems in London and Surrey to deliver outpatient transformation initiatives within their dermatology services using technology and innovation to streamline the patient pathway.

Against the backdrop of the pandemic, dermatology teams in south east London, south west London, and Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have showcased the challenges and opportunities to implementing their teledermatology projects. We built upon our quality improvement knowledge within the HIN and provided the tools and space for our dermatology teams to re-design their services with the support of a dedicated Relationship Manager. The insights gathered have generated key priorities that will help all dermatology services wanting to implement teledermatology.
