GP Round Table Event: Improving care for young people with eating disorders

We are inviting the South London GP and primary care community to share their experiences and contribute to the development of a brand new e-learning resource. Our aim is to improve care and support for young people typically under-represented in eating disorder services.   Background Literature and our own research has shown that a number of population groups are experiencing inequalities and barriers when seeking help and accessing treatment for eating disorders. The AHSN National Early Intervention in Eating Disorders Programme is developing an e-learning resource for health professionals to highlight these inequalities and improve care for all young people at risk of or living with an eating disorder. The discussion will focus on:

• Current challenges in general practice which impact on care and access to eating disorder services
• The role of GPs in identifying young people at risk of eating disorders not typically represented in the literature and services
• Recommended changes in practice across primary and secondary care to support GPs in providing safe and timely care for young people with eating disorders
• How best to promote the e-learning resource to GPs and primary care colleagues, to ensure maximum engagement and impact

Patient voice is a key part of this work. We have consulted with young people from BAME and LGBTQIA+ communities and higher weight individuals with lived experience of an eating disorder and asked these groups to share their stories with us. Now we want to hear your experiences as GPs working in this space.   Help us to improve care for ALL young people, together, by joining our virtual roundtable on Monday 6 December, 1.30 – 2.30pm. Who should attend? The event is open for registration to GPs and all primary care staff working in south London, Royal College of GPs, Health Education England, and NHS England. A link will be emailed to you 3 days before the round table takes place and again on the morning of the round table.
